“We do not want it to be legal in Sweden to burn holy scriptures such as the Quran, the Bible and the Jewish scriptures, and that at the same time it should be forbidden to mock the various religions,” imam Hussein Farah Warsame said.
It sounds so reasonable, right? But no one starts rioting and murdering when people burn Christian or Jewish scriptures, so what Warsame is really saying is that he wants to outlaw burning the Qur’an, and forbid mockery of Islam. Mockery is a hard hill to die on, because many people, particularly Christians (such as Antje Jackelén here), think it is wrong in every case to mock anyone else’s religion (I Kings 18:27 notwithstanding). Very well, but that is not the only issue here. Also at stake is whether or not Sweden, and ultimately the Western world in general, will surrender the freedom of speech and establish the precedent that it is forbidden to offend certain groups. It is a short jump from there to a tyranny that works its will unchallenged because it is forbidden to challenge those who are in power.
